The Fold, Shepherd Lane, Chorleywood.

The Fold is a replacement dwelling situated in the green belt in Chorleywood.

Our client wished to either extend or alter the existing 1960 bungalow that stood on the site.

After exploring various alternatives we came up with a new house design. The new home is highly energy efficient and very modern in style in line with our clients interest in modern design and his ambition to live in a property that was in his own words as close to being Off Grid or self-sufficient in energy terms as possible.

The new property was 50% constructed on the existing foundations of the original building but set forward of the original property to maximise the rear garden depth.

Although the new property is laid out over two floors it is designed to be no higher than the original single storey bungalow but is actually narrower overall although visually it appears to be twice as wide.

The ground floor of the property accommodates the two main living spaces which themselves are split by the central double height hallway. The Kitchen Family Dining area is situated in the rear wing of the property which exhibits a strong relationship to the courtyard garden via large sliding doors. The other main TV lounge area which leads ono the Study also addresses this courtyard which is formed between the two wings of the building.

At First floor, once again the central double height void splits the two sections of the building.

The Master bedroom suite is linked via a glass bridge and staircase to the children and guest bedroom wing.

The majority of the glazing is on the southern garden elevations whilst the Northern entrance elevation is relatively brutal with large areas of cedar cladding separating the glazed openings, slits and fractures. The Garden elevation is handled quite differently with individual spaces articulated volumetrically. Each of the children’s bedrooms feature a private window seat or projecting box which appear to hang from the deeply overhung eaves. Above this a staccato rhythm of the solar pvs hover over the roof like F16s on a flight deck.

The fabric of the building is specified to achieve 0.1 u-value, within the roof, walls and floor slab. All materials are traceable through chain of custody certificates. Used properly your home will cost about 1/10 of the cost of a conventional home to run.
